‘The State of Free Speech on Campus’ Series Exposes Repressive Policies Nationwide · 23 July 2009

The countdown is now complete for FIRE's series of blogs on The State of Free Speech on Campus. Throughout the past seven months, Samantha Harris investigated and evaluated policies at the top 25 colleges and universities in the nation, as ranked by U.S. News & World Report, exposing the speech codes that silence the students and faculty who attend them. Many of these schools harbor codes that punish, censor, or restrict student expression in one way or another. Only seven schools on the list receive "green" or "yellow light" ratings from FIRE's Spotlight database, which provides FIRE's research on the degree to which free speech is curtailed at a particular institution.

 

Anyone considering attending the schools on The State of Free Speech on Campus list that receive "red light" ratings from FIRE should be aware of the threats to free speech that exist there. For a full recap on the series, visit the top 25 list below:
