UNC says academic freedom ensured Saturday, November 29, 2003 - GREELEY - Responding to a request from a key lawmaker, officials and faculty at the University of Northern Colorado say there is little need for state legislation to ensure academic freedom. Senate President John Andrews, R-Centennial, has asked Colorado's 29 colleges and universities to provide evidence of policies to protect academic freedom. Andrews and other GOP leaders, including Gov. Bill Owens, have met with David Horowitz, the conservative leader of Students for Academic Freedom, which seeks to protect students and faculty from being persecuted for their political views. Andrews says he is collecting data to help him determine whether to introduce legislation next year guaranteeing academic freedom. In her response, UNC president Kay Norton concluded, "I do not think that any act of the General Assembly would assist us in giving greater protection to academic freedom on this campus." The Faculty Senate passed a resolution pointing out policies in place ensuring academic freedom. |
