Conservative Student Group Defamed as “Hate Group” for Opposing Illegal Immigration, Gay Marriage, a · 19 March 2007
East Lansing, Mich. – Young Americans for Freedom at Michigan State University will be put on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s “hate-group” list in April. Also on the list are racist skinhead groups, Nazi groups, and Ku Klux Klan groups.
The SPLC is doing something unprecedented by listing a university-recognized student group as a “hate-group”. The SPLC goes as far as to claim that YAF is white supremacist, gay-bashers, and is anti-immigrant.
YAF is in the process of locating a lawyer that will sue the SPLC on their behalf.
Kyle Bristow, Chairman of MSU-YAF said: “YAF supports the sanctity of marriage, the unborn, and opposes illegal immigration and race-preferences. Our values are not extreme and the SPLC has gone too far by listing us as a “hate-group”. Morris Dees of the SPLC should apologize for the character defamation that his organization is waging against us conservative college students.”
Kyle Bristow has appeared on Fox News before, when a protest turned violent at Michigan State University. The Young Americans for Freedom and the College Republicans co-sponsored an event in which Coloradan Congressman Tom Tancredo spoke about illegal immigration. During the event, the fire alarm was pulled twice, a 7-month pregnant woman was assaulted, YAF and College Republican members were spat on and kicked at, tires were slashed, and a car was keyed.
YAF is a conservative, non-partisan organization that was founded by William F. Buckley Jr. on September 11, 1960. Former YAF members include Ronald Reagan, Dan Quayle, Tom Tancredo, and the actor John Wayne. See MSU-YAF’s website at http://www.msu.edu/~yaf and the National YAF website at http://www.yaf.com
