GRIEVANCE PROCEDURES ON CLASS SYLLABI

WHEREAS:
Students experiencing harassment at Colorado State University are guaranteed recourse if the harassment is persistent; and,

WHEREAS:
Published guidelines concerning which offices handle grievances, and which documents include grievance procedures, are hard to find and not easily understood; and,

WHEREAS:
Convoluted provisions that are difficult to find may discourage students from seeking redress for harassment because they are confused about where to go and what to do; and,

WHEREAS:
Colorado Congressional Representative Shawn Mitchell suspended his bill concerning students' academic freedom after a Memorandum of Understanding was issued by public institutions of higher education promising to review grievance procedures and their publication; and,

WHEREAS:
President Larry Penley pledged Colorado State University's support of the memorandum by being a signatory to that document; and,

WHEREAS:
Dr. C.W. Miller vocally supported the concept of adding grievance procedures to class syllabi in a meeting on April 2, 2004.

THEREFORE BE IT HEREBY ENACTED
That the Thirty-Third Senate of the Associated Students of Colorado State University officially approves of the attached statement and requests that Faculty Council encourage professors to include this statement on class syllabi; and,

THEREFORE BE IT HEREBY FURTHER ENACTED
That the Thirty-Third Senate of the Associate Students of Colorado State University require the attached statement be included in all ASCSU Student Handbooks starting in 2005-2006; and,

THEREFORE BE IT HEREBY FURTHER ENACTED
That a copy of this legislation be forwarded to Dr. Larry Penley, Colorado State University President; Dr. Linda Kuk, Vice President for Student Affairs; Dr. C.W. Miller, Chair of Faculty Council; Dr. Peter Nicholls, Provost and Academic Vice President; Dana Hiatt, Director of the Office of Equal Opportunity; Shay Bright, Assistant Director, Conflict Resolution and Student Conduct Services; and Representative Shawn Mitchell of the Colorado House of Representatives.

Students are guaranteed to the right to be free from harassment and discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, creed, political beliefs, national origin, age, or handicap. If you feel that you've experienced such harassment, please talk with your professor, chair of the department, Conflict Resolution, or visit the ASCSU Office.

If you feel that none of these have sufficiently addressed your concern about harassment or discrimination based on age, race, religion, color, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, or handicap, please contact the Office of Equal Opportunity in the Student Services Building.

If you feel that none of these have sufficiently addressed your concern about harassment or discrimination based on political beliefs or ideology, please contact the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs in the Administration Building. They can offer you counseling and advice on your rights as a student regarding these forms of harassment and discrimination.
