It's easy to understand why the University of Wisconsin-Madison chose to investigate the teaching of instructor and 9-11 conspiracy theorist Kevin Barrett.

Indeed, one can sincerely wonder why a university would hire someone who claims that the collapse of the World Trade Center was an "inside job" in the first place.

Is this a great country or what?

Where else can a lecturer with marginal credentials, deep paranoia, and a self righteous streak a mile wide, play upon a gullible press eager for controversy to become an instant celebrity and a recognized "expert" on a subject so far removed from his own academic discipline it may as well be on the surface of the moon?

Some academics are just not capable of representing two sides of a debate.

By now, most everyone has heard about the recent academic freedom conflict at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

On July 11, Provost Patrick Farrell refused to fire Kevin Barrett, who is contracted to teach a course in the fall on Islam, Religion and Culture. Farrell's decision has caused uproar because Barrett is a proponent of a bizarre and outlandish conspiracy theory: that the attacks on America on Sept. 11, 2001 were perpetrated not by jihadist terrorists, but rather by the government of the United States. That's right: We did it to ourselves. When Barrett's dedication to this theory became known, numerous people, including some state politicians, issued strident calls for Barrett's immediate termination.
